Little One
By Hannah Moscovitch
Brewery Theatre, Bristol Old Vic Theatre School
In a sleepy suburb of Ottawa, Canada, adopted siblings Aaron and Claire recount tales from their turbulent childhood together. Weaving together a narrative that touches on mental illness, mail-order brides, and taboo sexuality, Little One is both humorous and hauntingly dark. Questioning the limits of love, family and self-sacrifice it asks how much are you willing to give for the ones you care about?

Touching, brave and disturbingly real, this production of Hannah Moscovitch’s Little One, running as part of Bristol Old Vic Theatre School’s Directors’ Cuts season, is unique and unsettling.
Brilliantly acted and directed by Laura McLean, wonderfully written and deceptively funny in places, Little One is a bold attempt to tackle the difficult subjects of abuse and mental health that ‘normal’ people often find it easier to ignore.
Kris Hallett, The Reviews Hub
It’s a tough watch but McLean directs with economy and an ear to its rhythm that ensures we are drawn into the ensuing horrors. She blends perfectly the art of the writing and the traumas of the themes. Based on the work here, she has a bright future.
The final shot to the plexus saw a tear roll down my usually stoical cheek. It’s a recommendation as much as a warning.
Mike Whitton, Stage Talk Magazine
Director Laura McLean has ensured that the dramatic tension never flags, and there are some decidedly edgy and disturbing moments.
Little One places very considerable demands upon its two young actors, and they respond magnificently. This is a gripping production that gets this year’s Directors’ Cuts season off to a flying start.
